Gillespie Shines in Round One VIC Opener
Anglo Australian Motorsport with driver Andrew Gillespie at the helm have launched their 2012 NSW Formula Ford Championship campaign in spectacular fashion over the weekend with a pole position and three from three race wins.
The pairing of Gillespie and Anglo Australian Motorsport proved to be a successful one in 2011 with Gillespie finishing second in the rookie standings and pre-2000 class after contesting only two rounds in a 1992 Van Diemen.
Eager to improve on his 2011 results Gillespie steps into an Anglo Australian Motorsport built and prepared Spirit WL11 for the 2012 season hoping to drive the team to a sixth consecutive NSW Formula Ford Championship.
The young Queenslander was at the top of the time sheets early on, qualifying his Spirit WL11 a neat 0.01.3359 seconds ahead of the closest Kent engine Formula Ford to secure pole position.
A short battle for position with a fellow competitor in race one saw Gillespie challenged but not beaten, able to win the battle and break away for a convincing win.
Race two was another successful outing, pulling away and creating a decent gap early on in the race Gillespie was clear to focus on his speed and car control which paid off on the time sheets finishing with the fastest lap for the race.
The third and final race for the weekend doubled as the trophy race and Gillespie, keen to add a first place trophy to his collection was on the pace from the start, setting the fastest time for the race and his fastest lap for the weekend on lap four of the eight lap race and crossing the line to secure three from three wins.
Impressed with his and the teams efforts over the weekend Gillespie was quick to point out the differences between the Van Diemen and the Spirit “running the Van Diemen in 2011 and stepping into the Spirit this year has highlighted the differences between the two chassis, the spirit is better under breaks and has more front grip and the better engine puts on par if not ahead of the front guys which will help my title fight. I am learning a lot about data and it is a real benefit having the data on the Spirit.”
“I am really enjoying running with Anglo, since my first test in August 2011 the team and especially Tim have been nothing but helpful, follow up and feedback has been great. The team has great technical knowledge and I am learning a lot. This weekend’s results have left me confident that we are on track to win the 2012 NSW Formula Ford Championship.”
Anglo Australian Motorsport heads to Wakefield Park Raceway, Goulburn April 28th and 29th for Round Two of the NSW Formula Ford Championship.
